CHAPTER 10

The conference room where Nate’s marketing team was meeting was literally the farthest room from his hotel room in the entire MGM Grand layout. He wasn’t formally timing his trip from his room to the meeting room, but he had looked at his watch right after he pushed the elevator button. That was exactly thirteen minutes ago, and he had been walking ever since.

This hike took Nate through the casino past numerous slot machines, gambling tables and the Keno lounge. He passed through multiple restaurants as well as the entrances to both the outdoor pool and the indoor amusement park.

Already his shins were starting to burn.

Unfortunately, Peg couldn’t cover for him in this meeting. He had to make a personal appearance and do the presentation in front of everyone – hangover or not, illicit one-night stand or not, possible infidelity against the boss’s daughter or not.

Peg, however, could skip out on the meeting and help him take care of some things behind the scenes. While he was yammering on and on about leveraging new media and utilizing a positive marketing paradigm, Peg promised to drive around town with Lexie to find out if there was a quick fix to the whole marriage dilemma.

Maybe we could get it annulled, Nate thought. Then he wondered if you could only do that if you were Catholic. Was Lexie Catholic? Did she care if it was an annulment or a divorce?

Next time I get married, I’m gonna know my wife a lot better, Nate promised himself.

Finally, Nate was in the home stretch. The hotel-casino complex was laid out in such a way that any businessperson meeting in the conference rooms had to walk by every possible way to spend money before he or she ever got to the conference center. Now, passing the arena where the boxing matches were held, Nate saw signs for his conference room.

He looked down at his watch. He was almost a half-hour late. He grumbled to himself. If this were a normal hotel, he would have only been fifteen minutes late.

Nate reached the conference room and slammed open the door.

The moment after he did this, he wished he was more delicate. The door flew open and slammed against the wall. The room, filled with marketing folks from his office, suddenly froze. All conversation stopped, and everyone turned to see who just entered.

“Uh, hi,” Nate said with a weak grin.

In the back of the room, Nate saw a lavish breakfast set up. About a third of the people were standing around the breakfast buffet, picking through what was left of croissants and bagels. The rest were sitting at round tables, looking bored out of their minds.

Nate made his way to the front of the room where there was an overhead projector with a laptop hook-up. He pulled out his computer, plugged it in and started to boot it up.

“Sorry I’m late, guys,” Nate said, smiling sheepishly at the crowd. They lost interest in him pretty quickly, and they all went back to their coffee and pastries.
